It is generally agreed that the Landing Page for a particular product on a website is very important for several reasons – SEO (or search engine optimization) and Conversions. A landing page is where visitors will land after clicking on a link from one of the search engines. This is the initial impression a visitor will have of a business or product – and you know the importance of first impressions!

Have you given any thought to what you can do to keep that visitor on your website other than appealing to their basic curiosity about your particular product or service? This detail is termed Landing Page Optimization which works hand-in-hand with SEO or Search Engine Optimization. Following are 7 Key Elements that will help you retain visitors once they have landed on your website.

SEO Tips – 7 Key Elements

A Headline or Feature with Clear Benefits. The use of unique fonts and colors and the locations of the headline or feature on the page are some of the things you need to consider. Your goal is to grab the attention of a visitor in 10 seconds or less which isn’t very much time!

An Opt-in. This is an easy-to-use area where the visitor will click to sign up for something free from you or request a newsletter, anything along that order. The benefit to you is that it gathers information about this visitor as a potential client.

Navigation. All navigation to other areas on your website should be easy and clear-to-use, requiring just one click to find the desired information. Too many clicks and you will lose your visitor.

Call-to-Action. Usually this is a large, easily-identifiable flag such as “Sign Up Now!” or “Click Here!” or “Start Now!” as an example. The visitor just can’t wait to keep exploring your website – and buy something!

Unique Selling Point (USP). This is very important on your Landing Page. It tells the visitor why they should buy from you; use your service, etc. It is good to have a Mission Statement to use such as “Ridding the world of bad websites, one at a time!”

Testimonials. Nothing sells your product or service as well as the glowing words of your customers! Images work better than words, so have at least one of the testimonials include a picture of the customer to show that it is a real person!

Strong Sales Copy. These could be additional benefits not listed in your USP, although it may not be needed if your USP did its job and convinced them right away! Unique prices, terms, and purchase deadlines could be included here.

If you pay attention to the above details, your landing page will increase its search engine optimization (SEO) and be rising in the search engine rankings as well as the conversions on the page itself. Don’t forget to keep changing the data in all of the above to keep attracting those search engines out there!

SEO or Search Engine Optimization has changed dramatically in the past few years. The reason is that Google has gotten wiser and is requiring websites to follow three basic rules. Following is an outline of the 3 Modern SEO Secrets.

In 2008, you could optimize a page, rely on getting backlinks to that page, and find your website at the top of most keyword results.

Flash forward to today. In order to get a website ranked today, you need three things:

1. Content

2. Quality Links

3. Interactions

Content

It’s a fact – there are no good rankings without content. It’s a hard truth to learn, yet that truth is valid. You must have content on a website in order to have even a slight chance of getting ranked for a single key phrase.

So build a multitude of quality content on your website now and then keep adding to it. What is the key? Make sure the content is optimized for high-ranked keywords that are actually searched for and have little competition.

The best way to build content in my opinion is a Blog. Create blog entries that deal with the keywords. Something like “10 Best Ways to [keyword]” or “Without [keyword], You Are Missing the Boat.” There are many articles on the Internet about content, so I won’t go into great deal; suffice it to say you need content in abundance to give your website a chance of getting ranked.

Quality Links

Google has always relied on incoming links to a website to determine if a page is relevant to a specific keyword search. In the early days of Google, you could optimize a page, create incoming links via blog comments, get listed in directories, and get ranked. In the very early days, you could participate in a link farm to get ranked. Google caught on to this and put a stop to it.

So links still play an important part, but now the important question is – are they QUALITY links? Quality links are basically links from quality sites that are related to your keywords. Google doesn’t want to see links from a plumber’s website directed to an accountant’s site. That doesn’t make sense. So Google will actually penalize that link and not reward it.

So how do you find quality links? The best way that we’ve found is to syndicate content to other blogs and make sure they point back to our websites with the keyword as the anchor. Article Directories are really great places to make this happen.

Another way to get quality links is to post comments on other related blogs. Just make sure that they are not “Nofollow” blogs. What is a “nofollow”? It’s a tag that’s embedded inside the anchor tag that tells the search engines not to follow the link. So you’ll want to look for blogs that have disabled the “nofollow” tag.

These are just a few techniques to get quality links pointing back to your site. Just know that quality incoming links are very important for your modern SEO strategy.

Interactions

The third key factor to getting linked is Interactions. Interactions are what is happening on your website – how often it’s updated, how often blogs are updated and even receive comments, how many links are added per day to the site, etc.

These are all very important because Google is actually rewarding these Interactions because it’s the best way for it to see if a site is popular. More interactions is equivalent to more popular and therefore more relevant to the search.

How do you get more interactions? Start blogging. Get involved on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Promote your blog and balance your link building strategy as listed above. Make it all look as organic as possible. Make it look as if you are actually participating on the Internet. It’s what Google wants to see and it’s what people who are surfing want to see.

SEO isn’t rocket science; however, it does take a little thought and a LOT of work if you want to do it right. If you combine all three key factors of modern SEO, which is content, quality links, and interactions, you will be sure to rise to the very top of the search engines!

Happy 4th of July!!

I want to wish all our readers and clients a very happy 4th of July Independence Day holiday! The 4th of July is especially important to me and Web Unlimited. Why? Follow along as I share the Web Unlimited story.

It all started seven years ago. Tara, my wife and our current President and CEO, and I had had a rough couple of months as she had been laid off from her job at a fairly large bio-tech firm — on April 1. Yes you read that one right. What a horrible joke they played on us.

Anyways we were having a rough go because we were trying to get her another job and, well in the College Station, TX, bio-tech jobs are few and far between. We were almost at our rope’s end and really were trying to figure out if we should stay or leave to a bigger city? We loved College Station and thought it would be a huge mistake to leave it and move to somewhere like Houston or Dallas, but if that’s what we had to do… well that’s what we would have to do.

On June 30, 2003 (three months after Tara’s lay off), as I was about to pack it up for the day, my current boss at another Web Design firm called some of the staff into the conference room. Strange.

As we all milled in there we all were wondering what we were there for. As the boss came in, he had a sober look as he told us that he was going to have to lay us all off.

What??

So there we were – Tara and I were both laid off at the exact same time. Talk about a rough night that was.

The next morning, July 1, 2003, we had a choice to make. Find employment elsewhere (I was sure I could as I thought I had talent and ambition) and possibly move or start up a company. Tara and I decided turn lemons into lemonade and start up our own company.

So with $200 and a dream to build the best web design firm in the Brazos Valley, we started Brazos Valley Design.

We found two clients in the next week and started building our client base. We still have both of those clients to this day. In fact we just re-designed our very first client and absolute favorite author’s site – Kathi Appelt.

In the next few months we were introduced to somebody who eventually invested in our business – Jeremy Hyde. He is now our VP Business Development and through his influence we have built a nationwide brand – Web Unlimited.

In the past seven years we have grown to a client base of around 300 clients – I’m positive we have designed more websites than any other web design firm in the Bryan/College Station area. Right now we are growing at a pace of between 10-20 websites per month.

Web Unlimited has also become Houston’s newest Houston Web Designers as we have recently opened an office in Houston. We are currently looking at expanding into the Austin and Dallas markets as well.

So as you can see the 4th of July signifies not only the Independence Day of America, but of myself and Tara and the start of our company. We always celebrate this time of year a little more than we used to as we both absolutely love what we do and wouldn’t change it for the world!!

Special Bonus

As a special token from Tara, Jeremy and myself – I would like to offer a 10% discount off your next purchase in the month of July. Just use the code INDEPENDENCE in the store or just mention this blog post to our sales staff.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend!!

I talk to a lot of business owners every single day and I have to say that very few of them actually “get it.” What do I mean? I mean most of them just don’t have a clue why they should even have a website much less what they should do with it. They think that they need a website because “it’s just time” or because they “just need one.”

This is a problem – a big one.

Why is it a problem? Because most websites are underutilized resources that most businesses neglect and then tell all of the friends that they “tried” the Internet and it “just didn’t work.”

NOTE – I keep putting these things in quotes not only because I’m being a little sarcastic, but because I’ve actually heard these things.

Your Website Has ONE Goal – Generate Leads

In the most fundamental thinking, your website has one goal – only one. It’s to generate leads. It’s that simple really. Get traffic to your site, convert them, and get them to come back.

I come across clients that just don’t understand this principle and think their site should have XX feature or YY feature and they end up focusing on the wrong things – things that don’t generate leads.

I’ve personally designed well over 300 websites in the past 16 years of doing this “Internet Gig” and I’ve just about seen it all. I’ve had people come to me with the greatest idea in the world, but a horrible marketing strategy and seen them flop. I’ve seen horrible ideas with a great marketing strategy that were hugely successful.

What I want to discuss today is why your website is more than “just a website.” Your website is the first thing that people should see. It’s not only your storefront, it’s your entire building with a huge billboard on top of it – metaphorically.

You wouldn’t leave your businesses building with a huge cracked window would you? Or would you let the grass grow up to a person’s height? Of course you wouldn’t. You would either cut it or hire somebody to do it and fix that window.

Your Website IS Your Storefront

Your website is in a way your storefront – whether you are selling product or generating leads. It’s the first thing that people search for (and hopefully find) when they hear good things about your company. So why would you work so hard to get people to refer business to you and then let your website just sit there? For instance, I come across websites that look outdated. And when I say outdated, I mean, really outdated – like 1998. Yikes.

Or I see sites with news items from 2007. Wow. (Note – it’s 2010).

Just like a normal brick and mortar store, make sure your website looks up to date (not 10 years old), doesn’t have old news or blog posts on it and looks like you actually care about it. It’s the first thing people see, so make it count.

Your Website is Your Best (or Worst) Sales Person

Your website is not only your storefront – it’s also your best (or worst) sales person. You wouldn’t believe the websites that I run across that say “Welcome to our company” on the front page. Wow. You just told your visitor that they found you. Great.

I suggest to my clients that they instead put something that talks to their clients – like “Better Houses Built by XX Company” or “Ridding the World of XX”. These headlines will talk directly to your visitors and tell them what you do.

That brings me to another pet peeve. Tell me what you actually do. You have three seconds from the time that a person comes to your site to when they leave if you haven’t captured their attention. If the visitor has to hunt to figure out what you do, then you will most likely lose them. So put somewhere that can be found what you do whether it’s pest control or web design.

The point is, that your website should be selling your company and not putting up generic stuff that everybody else has. It’s basic Marketing – distinguish yourself from the pack. Your website is the first and best place to do this.

Speaking of Internet Marketing…

Your website should be your biggest referral source. We get one to two leads per day through each of our websites at Web Unlimited — and yes, we have more than one. This happens because we of course put the energy into getting traffic and then converting it.

First we work on getting traffic to the site through search engines, social media, and newsletters. Then we constantly work on our sites to optimize them and get the most referrals we can. We push the sites as far as we can take them and then turn around and work on generating traffic again.

Websites are a lot of work, but they can be your best (and cheapest) employee working 24/7 on getting new leads. Your website should include a sound marketing strategy and sales funnel that leads people from the front page to a lead generation page.

We suggest you spend your marketing budget on your website before anything else as that person with an iPhone is searching for you – they just have to be able to find you. Then once you’re found – make sure you make the visit count and convert them into a lead.

There are three major website design pricing schemes used by designers to price their work. You may choose between charges per page, per hour, or per project depending on your agreement with the web designer. Having various website design pricing options means there’s a good chance of designing a website to fit within your budget.

In this article, we will examine the common pricing method used by web designers to charge for their design and see how each pricing option can affect the outcome of the website design.

Per Page Charging

Some web designers prefer their website design pricing to be by the page. This is the customary method used by freelance web designers. This is primarily because some web pages are more difficult to create than others.

As an example, let’s look at the home page. As compared to other web pages, it contains most of the intricate designs and graphics in order to attract the visitor’s attention. To achieve such results, much effort is put on the planning and layout creation of this main page. As a result, you get charged a higher price for your main page.

The rate for creating the sub pages is less than what you pay for the main page since designers often use templates which simplify the work process and you get to pay a lower price for the design of the sub pages.

A per page payment scheme for website design pricing is a good option for people wanting to create a website on a tight budget and willing to be satisfied with however many web pages they are able to afford.

Per Hour Charging

Web designers may also charge at an hourly rate. Unlike other website design pricing options, this can be a nuisance as you will need to constantly monitor your designer’s work for progress.

Charging by the hour could work if you know the skills of your designer adequately. It would also help for the designer to provide a pretty specific timeline for website completion. This will avoid questionable additional time charges at the end of your project.

Package Deal

A package deal option is the most popular payment method in website design pricing. It is undoubtedly the most convenient payment scheme for website creation these days as usually everything needed to get the site fully functional on the web is already included in the package.

All you have to do is obtain a proposal for your prospective website, provide input/content and on the completion date, you should have a website ready for business.

Most web design companies have a variety of website design pricing packages from which to choose. People on a tight budget can go for affordable packages that usually cost no more than $500. Economical website design pricing schemes often come with template designs plus a few hours of customization. If you want a one-of-a-kind website that’s totally exclusive to your website, you can always opt for one of the pricier custom packages to achieve that individual look.

If you are inexperienced with design and design workflows, it can be hard to communicate with a Custom Web Designer as to the appearance of your website. It will take your designer longer to determine what you want and more time in the design process can translate into higher costs for your website than originally budgeted. Here are a few tips to help communicate and save money.

Don’t use the following words and phrases:

Try not to say any of these popular buzz words made up by the non-designer advertising industry depicting feelings instead of reality when talking with your Custom Web Designer.

1 – “Pop” as in “Will you make that really pop?”

Web designers really can’t define what that means other than “make it look better.” We need something more explicit such as, “Will you add more colors? I would like more orange in the design.” This is much clearer, to the point and will result in the design you are trying to achieve.

2 – “Jazz” as in “Will you jazz it up a bit?”

Just as in the above, this causes confusion. Be more to the point like, “Will you add a better picture in the header? This one doesn’t portray what I’m trying to get across such as…” The clearer you are, the better the overall design and imagery will be.

3- “Feel” as in “I just don’t feel it.”

Custom Web Designers can’t translate a design based only on feelings. Be specific like, “I don’t like the navigation bar.” or “I don’t like the entire layout. Maybe something such as this website…” This will help the Custom Web Designer tremendously.

4. “Edgy” as in “Can you make it more edgy?”

I’ve been a Custom Web Designer for 15 years and have managed around 20 Custom Web Designers in that amount of time. Trust me, none of us can define what “edgy” really means; can you? Use terms like, “Will you make it look more like the Coca Cola or Nike website?” This is much clearer communication.

Other Tips

The rest of the tips on communicating with your Custom Web Designer deals with certain methods that slow down the design process or makes it confusing for the designer.

5. Web Design by Committee

Don’t design by committee. This is just a recipe for disaster as opinions are like elbows – everybody has one. (Note: Yes, I know the real saying, but I’m trying to keep it professional here.) Designing by committee is when you bring other people into the design process.

That may be all right with one or two people; but when you introduce anyone who has never attended any of the meetings with the designer, they could come up with something completely different that has no bearing on the original design and will most likely add dramatically to the scope of the original project.

This means more money and will result in total frustration for your Custom Web Designer. Either limit the committee to one or two people who attend every meeting with your designer or have your ‘committee’ meet by themselves, come to a consensus, and one representative present the results. Our best projects have dealt with a committee of one person who made all decisions for the company.

6. Send-it-Up-the-Ladder Method

The send-it-up-the-ladder method is related to the design by committee method except for one thing. The scenario is that the Custom Web Designer meets with the client or a committee and then designs a website and sends it for approval. The committee then sends it to the ultimate decision maker – the boss or owner – and they send it back because it isn’t “edgy” or doesn’t “pop” or doesn’t have feature “X”, “Y”, or “Z” that was never discussed at all before the design company gave a quote for the project.

This method almost always results in a dramatic scope change and/or a frustrated client and designer. Tip: If the ultimate decision-maker is not part of the committee, immediately make that person a member or you will otherwise most likely see a price increase.

7. Shotgun Web Design Method

The shotgun web design method is where the client expects 5 designs so they can “choose from the best.” This is also a recipe for disaster.

A Custom Web Designer spends 6 to 8 hours a day designing. If you ask them to spend all of that creative energy on 5 designs for one project, expect to pay triple or even quadruple the costs since they will spend that amount of extra time to design 4 or more websites that will never be used again.

8. Throw it Out There and Let’s See What Sticks

The other problem method is the client who wants the Custom Web Designer to “throw something out there and see what sticks,” which translates to “I have no idea what I want, so you get to guess.”

Custom Web Designers are not mind readers. If you just take some time and find some good sample web designs (two or three) to show to the web designer, it will speed up the design process and make everyone, including you, much less frustrated.

9. Flash Websites

Don’t get me wrong, Flash is “cool” and has its place; but not as an entire website for several reasons. Number one is that when you make a flash website, it is just like making a video and embeds all of your content (text) into the “movie” (what flash files are called). Google, and all search engines for that matter, rely heavily on text to categorize (translate: prioritize) your website. If Google cannot access the text (content), it cannot properly index your site. If Google cannot index your site, it basically ‘ignores’ your site and it will sink to the bottom of the search engine optimization ocean.

The second reason to steer away from entire Flash websites is that right now (2010), “they” are predicting a 400% growth rate in the next 5 years for smart phones with access to the Internet. More and more people will be surfing and searching on their phones. I do; my wife does; my sister, brother-in-law, their kids and even my mother does. That’s 100% in my family alone!

So what? Well, none of these phones can play Flash movies (the file explained above). So if your site is completely flash-based, your site will not be able to be seen on these new shiny phones. Don’t cripple your website because you want it to be “cool.” We can make it “cool” in other ways that will allow it to be seen by iPhone/smart phone users.

10. Trust your Designer

What is the best tip to save money for you and frustration with your Custom Web Designer? Trust that person. I am a Custom Web Designer and have designed over 200 websites. I know what works and what doesn’t. I know that comic sans should be thrown out as a font unless I am designing a day care website. I know you should never put blue text on a red background as color blind people will never be able to read the text.

I am the expert, so trust my judgment when I say, “Let’s put a call-to-action here” or “Let’s add a benefit-driven headline there” or “That might not be a good idea because of …” This is the Custom Web Designer’s job. We do it every day, so just trust us.

Summary

In summary, the clearer your communication is with a Custom Web Designer, the greater help you are providing and will save on the overall costs of your website. Be part of the process but not all of the process as this website ultimately is for your clients and not for you. The ultimate thing your website should do is convert a visitor into a customer.

Most people who have made the decision to invest in a website often ask the question “What are reasonable web design rates?” Well, that depends on what kind of website you want and what its intended usage will be. Designs for websites are almost endless and, with so many web developers offering their services, it’s nearly impossible to establish a definitive list of web design rates.

In order for web developers to determine web design rates for your website, you have to know what kind of a website you will be establishing. Is it a personal website? Are you trying to make money online through niche websites? Are you working with a well known company? These are few of the factors which will enter into a determination of web design rates.

Websites can be categorized into three types, each type with its corresponding web design rates. Determine the category of your website and will have a better idea of a possible cost for your website.

Low Expectation Websites

This is the most affordable area in web design rates. Prices for this type of website can be a few hundred dollars. This is definitely affordable for a website; however, don’t expect to have a high end design!

What you will probably receive for low web design rates is a basic HTML-style page with few graphics. If your goal is to make money online, my tip is to avoid low end web sites. They tend to look as cheap as their price and it is unlikely that you will make any money with just a basic design website. Your potential customers will not put their trust in you based on a website that doesn’t appear as if you have invested adequate money into its design.

Don’t get me wrong – you can still use low end websites if your goal is just to have a personal website and post a few pictures. With any website you want, make sure to know what kind of work your designer will produce before making any payments.

Mid Expectation Websites

If you are looking for a well designed website for a reasonable price, mid range websites will probably be the area to search for reasonable web design rates. This is usually the category for niche businesses and some commercial websites.

Web design rates in this category can range from about five hundred dollars to a few thousand depending on the customization you need for your website. With the low price packages, you get a template design with little or no customization. You will either need a mid-range website or at least an option for customization such as headers, backgrounds, logos, etc. at a reasonable rate from a low range website designer.

If you need a completely personalized website, you can always look for customizable web design packages. Just make sure that you have an adequate budget for designing the website as web design rates in this range are dependent upon how unique you want your website to appear.

High Expectation Websites

Do you want to have a state-of-the-art design for your website incorporating the latest web design technology? You will surely need a high range for web design rates. This is the type of website used by large companies to create their own unique online impression and the web design rates for this type of website is in the thousands of dollars. With high range websites, you will get a totally distinctive website with expert designers working on your graphics who specialize in each aspect of design.

Web design rates vary greatly so be a wise investor of your money and do your preparation based on the above clues. Use a professional web design company to ensure the best results. Good luck!

Yet you don’t want a cheap-looking website that takes hours to load onto a computer. I can’t blame you for thinking that way. These days, that’s often the problem you encounter from designers who offer low prices.

I’m not saying that it is impossible to get a high quality inexpensive web design; actually it is possible. To find that ideal balance between cost and quality, you may have to invest a great deal of time to find a designer who can provide an inexpensive web design. After all, web design is one of the biggest factors that will ultimately determine how well your site will perform and cost.

To find an inexpensive web design, search for prospective web designers online. Google on it and in just seconds, you will get a long list of web designers wanting to get the job. So how do you know which of them offers high quality inexpensive web design?

Price

Let’s look at the Price Tag first. The cost is no doubt the biggest decision you must make when choosing a web design. Narrow your list by choosing web design companies that offer prices within your budget. Set your parameters wide enough to come up with a list of at least twenty web designers who offer prices in your range.

This is a tedious task; but it will pay off in your search for an inexpensive web design, even if you have to go through dozens of potential web designers before you find the right one. When examining each of the designers, don’t hesitate to ask them what makes their design affordable or expensive. This is an excellent way to find out what services you will get for the amount you pay.

Portfolios

Continuing on your search for an inexpensive web design, you should do some Portfolio Research. Every good web designer should have a portfolio available online to showcase their previous designs. This gives you a glimpse of the quality of the designer’s work. If they don’t have a portfolio available, then take them off your list.

Go through your list and make a thorough search on each of their portfolios and see samples of their work. Most web designers follow a certain pattern on their designs. See if their designs are the kind that suits your taste.

Technology

It is also important to know the technology they use for their web designs. There are different approaches for creating a site depending on the purpose of the site and its features. So it is important to know if the designer has the set of skills required for the kind of inexpensive web design you are seeking.

Functionality

Functionality is as important as the design. If possible, visit their completed websites to see if they are user friendly. Good looking graphics are useless if visitors are unable to navigate around the site. In my opinion, functionality should ALWAYS be more important than design in a web design regardless of the budget.

Contact and Follow Up

Going through their samples should give you a good idea on their type of design. If the design looks appealing to you, and the cost fits into your desire for an inexpensive web design, then your next step is to contact the designers and present your project. See what web design company’s follow up time is. If it’s within 24 hours you can expect that company to be “on the ball.”

Design Process

Finally, in your search for a quality, inexpensive web design, you need to understand the Communication process. Throughout your search, you undoubtedly will have communicated with many web designers about your website project. When you select a designer, you will be giving instructions and exchanging ideas with that person until the completion of the project.

So pick a web designer who can understand and relate well to your concept and ideas. This will ensure that the outcome will be similar to what you have in mind for a quality, inexpensive web design.

If you follow all of the above tips on how to find a quality inexpensive web design company, then your project will be sure to be successful.
